Organisation of Props, Actor and Eqiupment (Jack Burgess)
For my photo shoot, I have used my sister, due to the fact that it was easier than using my partner. The props I have used are some ordinary sunglasses, and also the "war paint" placed below the sunglassess. This adds to the fact that its makes people want to know who the artist is due to hiding some of her identity. For this shoot I have used a Nikon 1. I also haven't used any other equipment such as an tripod, because the pictures were taken from above my model.
Photo Shoot Anaylsis (Jack Burgess)
For my photoshoot I have placed my model in front of light coloured background. With this used it ultimatley makes the model stand out. I have followed the conventions of my chosen music genre. Electronic/Dance with the use of sunglasses on the model. This could co-inside with that fact that she is trying to hide her identity. For taking the shot I have took the picture above the model, purposely that i'll have room to fit in the Masthead and other neccessary conventions which need to be included on the Front Page

Organisation of actors, props and equipment (HARRY SHORT)
I will use my brother as a model as it is easier than using my partner.
the props I used were ray-ban sunglasses and a beanie hat to add mystery to my model and hide some of the identity like most electronic magazines do.
I used a nikon d40 digital camera.
I didn't use a tripod as the pictures were taken from below my model.

photo shoot plan and simple evaluation (HARRY SHORT)
For my photo shoot I shot at night so
it had a naturally dark background and the moon was behind the model.
I followed the conventions of my chosen music genre by putting
sunglasses on the model and a beanie hat to hide some of the models
identity. I placed the camera under the model for most of the shoot
as this allowed a sense of size in the final photos and also allowed
simple poses look better.
selection and rejection (Harry Short)
http://www.flickr.com/photos/87903312@N06/
I will probably reject this photo as my front cover photo. This is because there is no mode of direct address and this will not grab any potential readers attention. Also the moon behind the models hat stands out a lot more than i first thought so would direct any attention away from the model. The sunglasses blend in to the dark background which make them less effective as a prop as they are barely visible.
This photo will also be rejected because of the background which is quite noticeable due to the flash of the camera. This photo does use direct address but the sunglasses again blend into the dark background.
This photo is my favourite photo and will most likely be the one i use for my front cover as it uses direct address and the model is posed well enough to go onto a front cover. The moon which stands out behind the models head will be covered by a flash or a puff.

This photo is also a possibility for my front cover as the model is posed towards the right hand third and there is direct address involved as the model is looking down the camera lens. The moon could be covered up with a flash or a pug.
This photo will also be rejected as the background stands out a lot so puts the reader off the model. The model does use direct address but i think the model is too far away from the camera to grab the readers attention.

Rejection and Selection (Jack Burgess)
I will probably reject this picture as a possible contender for the front cover because there isn't enough space to fit our Masthead of "Freefall". Which consequently cutting out parts of the model. Also the insufficient prop of alcohol bottle being included in the shot.
This photo has a very good possibility of being the picture for my front cover. Because there is a good enough amount of space for the Masthead and other stories to place around the model. The props which have been used in this photo, such as the glasses are suitable enough that it will not offend any of the consumers.
This picture will probably be rejected due to the fact that the background (a brick wall) is really basic, and it doesn't really show my skills as a photographer. Also that it doesn't link to my chosen music genre of Electronic/Dance. With no props being used, it makes the picture less interesting towards the reader.
Even though that the background is a brick wall. Which seems basic and uninteresting, it is quite possible that this may be used for my front cover because there enough space to spread the Masthead and cover stories.

TARGET AUDIENCE ANALYSIS AND INSTITUTIONS
A good publishing institution for us to
use would be Development Hell as it publishes the worlds leading
dance and electronic music magazine. Development Hell appears to be a
small company to publish with and seems fairly risky but development
hell has backing of larger companies like the guardian which holds a
14% share of the company. Development Hell also has links to Dontstayin.com which promotes music magazines of our genre in foreign
countries such as the USA and Spain etc. Another benefit of Development Hell publishing our magazine is that it is a small
publishing company and could help our magazine more than a more
established publishing group like Bauer and Future Star as it would
be a more independent publication. There is also a Mixmag app that is
available for iPad on the app store, having an app would be greatly
beneficial for our magazine as it would promote it across the
internet and get more readers.
From our Target Audience research, we have found that red is most dominant colour to use in our magazine compared to first initial thoughts, of blue being the common colour.
A major issue we looked at was the age range for which this magazine should be aimed at. From the information of our questionnaire we've found out that the best age range to aim for is from 16 - 21. So in our magazine we have got to make sure that articles fit the specific age and are not aimed at any younger or older age.
When we asked would people like freebies, such as posters, CD's maybe even some festival tickets, the general response was yes. So to make our magazine more successful and popular we've got to include freebies to keep the consumer happy.
The biggest question was, what is would be the best name for a our magazine, the contenders were Freefall, Laser, Electro, Breakout and The Club. The most common answer that came up from our questionnaire was Freefall. When we asked why the had chosen that option, we were told that when your at clubs or festivals you tend to let yourself go and "live free".
The price magazine was discussed thoroughly, we didn't want to either over price the magazine and neither under price it. So with options that we put into the questionnaire. The price which was chosen most of all was £3.50, when we saw these results we agreed that this was a fair enough result.
Another question which was on the questionnaire was "Would like hear about new an upcoming artists or just the "now" artist? from the results we gathered that the consumer would like to hear about both of them. So in our magazines we must equally include new artists while making sure were including artists such Steve Aoki and Deadmau5

Content Page Analysis 1 (Jack Burgess)
This contents page is very conventional. The main image is placed on the left hand side of the page so it gives space to what's inside the magazine. With this picture being quite large, this represents that is the the main focus point of the magazine. The page layout follows convention as the contents of the magazine is placed and listed down the right side of the page. There is smaller image placed on the right side of the page, this may mean that this represents a smaller article/ focus point in the magazine.
The main picture is two young adults looking quite serious in facial expression however this may represent a certain background from which they have come from or maybe what they've been told do by the photographer. These two people look very fresh to the music business and may want to get recognition. In my magazine I may incorporate new artist, so the audience understands who they are whilst putting artist who have been round for a long time.
The use of colour is vital to any magazine and in "mix-mag" they've used the colours of white, black and yellow, this is too make sure that no colours clash with each other. In my magazine I'll have to make that I use the correct colour scheme to make sure it doesn't clash in anyway possible, and to make sure it suits the consumer.
The text on the page is just the right amount so that it gives the consumer enough information for them to know what is featuring in that issue but not too much that it'll bore the reader entirely.

DPS Analysis 1 (Jack Burgess)
This double page spread is from the magazine "mix-mag". The magazine uses some media conventions throughout the double page spread. The first thing, is the leading paragraph. The result of this is that the reader is automatically drawn to the article about the artist which the magazine is interviewing. The format of this article is that it is a Q+A. A good presentational feature is that the editor has highlighted in bold when the magazine has asked the question while the answer is just in normal text. I might use this in my magazine and double page spread because it is an informative yet fun way to find out about the artist which is being focused on.
On the other side of the DPS which is conventional to my magazine is the large picture of Dizzee Rascal, the main focus. The technique used to take this picture is high key. This allows there to be a lot more light into the shot. There isn't too much light that you lose his white suit into the same coloured background. His attire could relate back to the lead paragraph "a young, rich but surprisingly grounded rapper" Which means that he has worked his way up to being famous and rich. In the shot, his head isn't the main focus, only due to his gazing straight into the camera. However the colour of his shirt purple contrasts with the colour red in the lead paragraph which adds more diversity to the DPS. The type of shot used for the DPS is a mid shot. the expression is that his humble and grateful for his success. This could be a good type of shot to use in my magazine because it ultimately looks better on a DPS.
The font style of this double page spread is san-serif, this a typical convention to use in a music magazine of electronic and dance genre. Another good feature of this DPS is the drop capital which is draws the reader into the article.
A common feature used in "mix-mag" is the banner across the tope of the page which goes across both pages. With all the "mix-mag" magazines I have looked at, that is used very regularly which makes it a house style in the magazine.

CONTENTS ANALYSIS 2 (HARRY SHORT)
This contents page is more conventional than the previous one analyzed. The main image is placed on the left hand side of the contents page and takes up the majority of the page, this probably means that the picture represents the main article in the magazine. The layout of the page follows convention as the contents of the magazine are listed down the page. There is a smaller image which represents a smaller or secondary article in the magazine. The main picture represents the lifestyle in which the magazine is aimed at, i will be looking to do that in my magazine. The contents in this magazine is more tasteful than the previous one and dosent clash as much, i may use a black and white colour scheme in my contents page. The text on the contents is simple and there is not to much so it wouldn't bore the reader, in my contents page i will probably try and keep things simple.
CONTENTS PAGE ANALYSIS 1 (HARRY SHORT)
The style of this contents page is unconventional compared to other music magazine contents pages. This contents page is layed out like a notice board and divided up into sections so readers can easily find which part of the magazine they want without having to scan down a list. I will not be using this style in my magazine as i will be using a more conventional contents page layout. The heading of the contents page is conventionally at the top of the page in bold clear writing, in my magazine i will probably put the contents heading down the side of the page. The pictures on the contents page are also in a notice board fashion and also give the reader an insight into some of the story's in the magazine which are not displayed on the cover. My contents page will use a lot more conventional styles than this one as this contents page looks too crowded i think and too much for a reader to take in. There is use of a lot of colours in this contents page (white, yellow, pink and black) which do catch the eye but also clash slightly and crowd the page more. In my contents page i will use a maximum of three colours, probably a primary colours on black or white background

DPS ANALYSIS 2 (HARRY SHORT)
This Dps uses a pull quote "people think im an attention seeker, but im just honest" to grab the readers attention. The style of the text in the pull quote is like a ransom note which will also grab the readers attention. In my magazine i will probably use a pull quote. There is also a by line in the double page article which states the editors name, i will not be using a by line in my Dps There is also a drop capital at the start of the article which shows the reader where the start of the article is, this is a typical convention in most magazines, i will use a drop capital in my article. The image used fulls one half of the Dps The artist is presented to be quite messy looking which is alien to a magazine of this music genre as most artists are presented to be neat and tidy. This Dps dosent use a lot of colours mainly black, red and white this directs the readers attention to the right places of the Dps. In my Dps i will keep the use of bright colours modest.
DPS ANALYSIS 1 (HARRY SHORT)
This double page spread is from an issue of mix-mag. This DPS uses some media conventions you would find in a double page spread of a magazine. For a start it uses a lead paragraph to draw a reader into the article and to give an insight into what most of the article will be about. In my magazine i will probably use a lead as they are typical in music magazines of my chosen genre. The Dps article is a Q+A article and the editor has used a highlighted bolder font to show where the questions are. In my magazine i will probably avoid doing a Q+A type article. One page of this Dps it a picture which is conventional in magazines of my chosen genre but i will also avoid doing that in my final magazine as i like the idea of putting text on both pages and using a smaller picture. The image used on the Dps is a full shot where the models are sat down for my Dps i will probably use a full shot as they are a convention in music magazines of my chosen genre and i think a full shot will work and look better on a Dps article. The article i am analyzing it uses sans-serif fonts which are again is a typical convention in music magazines of dance/electric genre. However not used in this article is a drop capital which i would like to use in my final magazine.

INITIAL IDEAS (HARRY SHORT)
Our
group is looking to base our music magazine at the dance and
electronic genre of music, artists such as Deadmau5, Swedish House Mafia, Steve Aoki and The Bloody Beetroots etc. The age range for our
magazine will be around 18-21 as a lot of electro/dance festivals
have a minimum age limit of 18. For the magazine we have thought of
two names tat have meaning the first is laser as a lot of
electro/dance festivals have a lot of laser lights, the other
possible name was freefall as the music our magazine will be based
on generally drags you in and zones you out from reality. Both of
these names will stick into a potential readers mind as they are
simple but recognisable names. the
social group that our magazine will be aiming at is middle class.
Due to the prices of tickets to go to certain festivals such as
Tomorrow-land or Cream-fields or even individual artists concerts are
quite expensive. This magazine will be aimed at both genders as the
genre of music isn't really a gender based type of music.

Initial magazine ideas (Jack Burgess)
For our music magazine we are looking to aim this at the people who are into electronic/dance music, such as Deadmau5, Steve Oaki and Swedish House Mafia. The possible age range for our magazine is from 18 year olds to 21 years old. A reason why we have chosen this age range is because it is a possible audience that goes to electronic/dance music gigs in Britain or maybe around the world to see their musical icons.
A possible name for our music magazine will probably be "Laser". We came up with this name because at many electronic/dance music gigs or festivals a lot of smoke and lasers are used to get the crowd to have more fun and get more excited whilst the artist is playing. It is a simple name and ultimately it'll stick into the readers minds and won't forget it.
For our magazine, the gender were aiming at is both. Because electronic/dance music is not just liked by either male or female, both genders appreciate the music so both genders should be aimed at and just one to cause any discrimination or sexism throughout the magazine. A social group that we are also aiming at is middle class. Due to the prices of tickets to go to certain festivals such as Tomorrowland are quite expensive, so in conclusion we'll be aiming this magazine at people who are highly interested in electronic/dance music and love to go to them types of festivals. And at both genders to not cause any tension between any sexes and people who are slightly middle class.

Magazine Anaylis 2 (Jack Burgess)
In this version of Mixmag they main type of colour scheme is yellow, blue and white. Yellow stands out a lot more than any other colour on the front cover whilst the blue adds contrast. However the white makes both the blue and yellow both equally stand out, these colour make the magazine seem more relaxed with being harmonious colours. The way that the Prodigy are set up is that the main figure of the group is standing in front of the other members, this lets us know who is the main figure in the group, meanwhile every member in the group has their own third, this make us realize that no member is lower down in the group. The masthead "mixmag" is placed behind Prodigy because maybe it isn't a well known magazine or that is just the house style of the magazine that it usually places it masthead behind it's artist on the front cover.
Majority of the cover stories are placed on the right and left sides of the front cover. With this technique used it lets the audience/reader see more the artist who is appearing on the front and who the main story is pin pointed at. The magazine "Mixmag" has also used a pug. It is placed right at the top the page on the right. This maybe because of when the magazine is the supermarket, you'll only be able to see the top of the magazine along with the masthead. The lead is placed above the masthead to boost the magazine of it being the worlds biggest dance music magazine. It is in yellow to contrast with the background of blue but to contrast with the masthead itself "Mixmag". This gives it more dimension and also contrasts colours again with the masthead being the colour white and the lead a bright yellow.

Magazine Analysis (Jack Burgess)
In this article of Mixmag we can see that David Guetta is placed directly in the middle of the magazine. Using the middle third to make the reader knows what the main story is. There is a puff which is placed right next to him, which stands out due to the plain background and the flash being luminous yellow and pink colored. With what David Guetta is wearing, it makes him look casual, relaxed and confident. However with him wearing the sun glasses it makes him look more secretive and mysterious. The masthead "Mixmag" is placed in front of David Guetta, this could mean that the magazine isn't well known or it is just house style of putting the masthead in front of any artist that the magazine is covering

REPRESENTATION OF GENDERS AND SIMILAR PRODUCT RESEARCH (HARRY SHORT)
In western culture beauty if the main focus of women, more so then any other quality. Where as men are generalised as being dominant characters who are supposed to show off their masculinity.
Feminism has been a recognised social philosophy for over 30 years and great changes in women's roles in western society have occurred over time.
Women are often represented as being part of a context, a family, friends and colleagues as well as working as part of a team more often than working alone.
The representations of women that make it into media are all similar they are all supposed to highlight the beauty and sexuality of a women and make these two quality's seem more important than any other. In any magazine the editors seem to focus more on the sexuality of the women by dressing them in as little as possible or put the women in provocative poses and try to make them look as naturally beautiful as possible. Many magazines tend to use the women's eyes as a direct address to draw in a reader. Here is an examples of women in magazine covers annotated to show how women are represented
In this example of a magazine cover the model is looking at the camera to make direct address with the reader as well as playing with her hair in a flirty pose to try and draw a reader in.
Where as men in the media are supposed to show off how dominant and muscly they are, especially with younger men. Males are stereo typically supposed to show off their physical and intellectual power as well as sexual attractiveness, physique and independence of thought and action. Male characters are often represented as being as isolated and not needing to rely on others ( a lone hero type of figure). However men are expected to groom themselves and look after their appearance now more than ever. Older men are expected to have a buffness to them where as younger men usually have a slight edge of geekyness to them.
For example this cover highlights that men are kind of expected to spend some time in the gym keeping in shape as well as looking after their appearance through grooming. one of the only similarities with this cover and the cover with a women on is that they both use the models eyes as direct address to the reader.
In my chosen genre of music (electronic+dance) the artists on covers tend to hide some of their appearance leaving the reader to imagine what the artist fully looks like, some artists even cover their whole face (DeadMau5). Most males artists of this genre tend to have a geeky edge to their appearance. This music genre is predominantly male dominated so if women are featured on magazines they would focus on sexuality.
In my music magazine i will follow a lot of the conventional representations of men or women by adding mystery to the image of a male model as well as a slight edge of geekyness. i will maybe highlight the sexuality of a female model like a lot of dance music magazines do.
SIMILAR PRODUCT RESEARCH
In my music magazine i will follow a lot of the conventional representations of men or women by adding mystery to the image of a male model as well as a slight edge of geekyness. i will maybe highlight the sexuality of a female model like a lot of dance music magazines do.
SIMILAR PRODUCT RESEARCH
This magazine follows a lot of typical conventions you see in most music magazines. The mast head is located at the top of the magazine usually for display purposes. The mast head goes behind the main image suggesting that mix-mag is a well established and recognisable magazine.
The main image is located in the middle third and relates to what the main story will be about within the magazine. There is use of a puff in the top right corner giving an insight to what else may be in the magazine.
The cover stories and majority of text found on the cover intrude on the central image giving the magazine cover more depth. There is a use of AIDA through the use of two freebies on the front cover. The model (DeadMau5) has a mask on which further backs up the idea that electronic and dance music magazines add mystery to the identity of male models. The magazine uses the eyes on the models mouse head as a mode of address as well as using the models face in the mouth of the mask to catch the readers eyes. The strap line is located above the mast head so the reader can read it and recognise it whilst on display in a supermarket, the strap line is also the motto for the magazine. Most of the front cover texts are sans serif fonts which give a boldness and modern look to the front cover. This magazine looks like it is aimed at a slightly younger audience maybe 15-20 years of age because of the crowding on the front cover.

This
front cover uses a lot of typical conventions you will find in a
music magazine. The masthead goes across the central image probably
implying that the magazine is not well established and they need the
masthead to stand out more. The central image uses the rule of thirds
placing the image in the right hand third and a lot of the text and
cover stories in the left hand third. The writing on the front cover
is angled slightly, this is to make the magazine stand out more as
the text is not flat on the page. The magazine uses AIDA to grab a
potential readers attention through the use of a freebie across the
top of the cover, the freebie is advertised across the top of the
magazine cover for display purposes. The magazine front cover also
uses a lot of conventions in terms of the representation of gender as
it uses sunglasses to hide some of the models identity which is
usually seen when representing males on the front cover of magazines
of this genre. The front cover does'nt really have a mode of address
as the models eyes are covered in sunglasses, to address the reader
it looks like this magazine uses the contrast of colours (pink, white
and yellow). This cover uses sans serif fonts which are a typical
convention in this genre of music magazine as it looks more modern
and bold. The target audience this music magazine cover is trying to
stand out to is probably from about 16-20 years old.
For my
product I will probably use a lot of the conventions that are seen in
this magazine cover as they stand out to the target market.

My Photo shoot Analysis (Jack Burgess)
My photo shoot went alright; there was nothing wrong with any
including the model, the location, the props or costume. This photo shoot took
place throughout school including, the stair, outside on the benches and in the
6th form area. The models for my photo shoot were Kyle Kitchen,
Jacob Kirby, and Harry Short. They were all good models to use. They extremely
professional with what they were doing and how they performed

Photo Analysis (Jack Burgess)
3 Best pictures
This picture could be
used for my magazine because the lighting is neither too bright or too dark to
overpower the model while taking the picture. Also the angle for this picture
is also good that it can be used for the magazine. For these reasons this could
be possibly used for cover of the magazine.
This picture could be used for the frontcover of my magazine
because lighting isn't too dark however to light maybe just a bit too bright to
used for the frontcover of my magazine.
This picture could also be good enough to use on the
frontcover of my magazine because the angle of the model is right that pieces of of stories can fit around the model.
Even though the lighting is a bit too dark on the left of the picture but could
is justified because of the light being a little bright on the right of the
model.
3 Worst pictures
This picture wouldn't be used for my frontcover because the
lighting is extremely too light to be used. With this it doesn't balance out.
Also the angle of the model is wrong because there is too much space left
around the model for this picture to be used for the magazine.
This picture couldn't be used for the frontcover of my
magazine because the lighting is too dark and wouldn't be suitable for the
frontcover.
This picture isn't good enough to be used for the frontcover
of my magazine because the lighting too light. Also that the model doesn't seem
to be taking much notice to the camera and seems to be taking this photo shoot
much seriously.

used a speech box and placed it in the corner because there wasn't a default
shape which looked suitable for a flash. I coloured the flash red so it would
stand out more from the light blue house colour, again the writing like in the banner
is white because it stands out. If I did I again I would make the shapes e.g.
the flash not as blocky and have the text in a darker colour and also bigger in
the case of the cover stories.

PHOTO ANALYSIS (HARRY SHORT)
INITIAL PHOTO ANALYSIS HARRY SHORT
Photo 1
This photo is probably one of
the best photos I took as the lighting
is pretty good and the model stands out
in the picture instead of anything else.
The photo was shot while the model was sat on the stairs in a
corridor. The angle of the photo is
good but not perfect as the photo is not
perfectly straight, this could be because of camera wobble while taking the
photo. The model hated this photo but I liked it because the model is the focal
point of the picture and there are no intrusions from the background.
photo 2
This photographs is probably the worst I took as there is too much
going on in the background which draws the attention of model and to the
background. The lighting would be good if there wasn't glare from the laminated
sheets behind the model. Probably the only good thing about this photo is that
it is a mid shot photo. I did like this photo to start with because of the pose
but whilst analyzing it is turned out to be a poor photo because of the
background.
Photo 3
This photograph is probably the best one I took as the model stands out
in the picture, there are no background intrusions and the lighting is pretty
much perfect. One bad point of the picture is the red eye in the model but that
could be removed with photoshop. The angle of the photo is perfect and the
frame is good too. Personally I think this is the best photo I took. However blog spot would not allow me to rotate the image
Photo 4
this photo is also one of the worst as the lighting is basically no
existent the background is more visible and better quality than the actual
model who should be the focal point of the picture. The scene would be pretty
good if there was good lighting or I used a flash on the photo. The angle and
frame are probably the only good points about this photo.
Photo 5
Photo 5
This photo is not the best but not the worst. The lighting is pretty
good and there aren't too many obvious background intrusions other than the
clock in the bottom right and bright blue poster on the bottom left. There is
some blur which could be because of the camera shaking while I was taking the
photo. This photo was taken from below a balcony. Blog spot would not allow the picture to be rotated.
Photo 6
this photo I class as the worst because of the awful focus. This photo
would have been good if the focus was good, the background is not intrusive and
the model stands out in the photo. The model also though this was an awful
photo due to the focus. It was set on a railing where the model sat. The awful
focus was probably because I moved the camera before the camera had finished taking the photo. Blog spot would not allow for this picture to be rotated.
